Working with Artists: Access Riders

We want to support artists to do their best work with us.

We recognise that everyone works differently, and you may have access needs or working preferences that are important to share. One way this can be communicated is through an access rider.

We understand that access needs can change, and that not everything works the same way for everyone. We aim to approach these conversations openly and collaboratively, and to be clear about what is possible within each project.

If you have any questions or would prefer to talk things through, please get in touch with us at info@festivalofmaking.co.uk

Access Riders FAQs

What is an access rider?

An access rider is a document that outlines any support, adjustments or working preferences that help you do your best work.

This might include things like:

  • Communication preferences
  • Travel or accommodation requirements
  • Working hours or scheduling
  • Physical Access
  • Support needed for meetings, admin or delivery

You can include as much or as little information as feels right for you. You do not need to share medical or diagnostic information, only what you need in order to take part in the project.

Sharing access needs with us

At the point of contracting, we will invite you to share any access requirements with us if we have not already had a conversation about this sooner.

You can do this in whichever way works best for you:

  • By sending your own access rider
  • Or by letting us know you’d prefer to talk it through

If you don’t have an access rider and would like to create one, we’ve included some helpful resources at the bottom of this page.

What happens next?

Once we receive your access rider or information:

  • It will be reviewed by the relevant producer
  • We will arrange a conversation with you to talk through your needs
  • Together, we will agree on what adjustments can be put in place

We will be open and transparent about what is possible within the scope of the project, we can’t always promise that we will be able to meet each and every need, but we will work with you to provide support where we can. This is an ongoing conversation, and we recognise that needs can change.

How we use this information

Any information you share with us will only be used to support your involvement in the project.

We will:

  • Only store the information we need
  • Focus on practical adjustments
  • Limit who has access to this information internally and only share your access rider with relevant team members where needed and always with your permission

If you share a full access rider, we will use it to inform our discussion and agreed adjustments, and will not retain it longer than necessary.
