Ever wanted to give rug tufting a go? Now’s your chance!

Join Alena Ruth in tufting a couple of lines and make you mark in a collaborative piece of art. You can pick your yarn selection and tuft some straight lines (or curved if you’re feeling brave!) and watch the magic appear right in front of you.

This activity is suitable for ages 5+, though participants under 10 years of age will receive assistance with the tufting machine from Alena. Please note that this is a walk-up activity, where one person at a time will take part. You are welcome to stay and watch the progress, but safety measures will be in place to ensure a safe distance.

About Manchester Tufting Workshops

Alena Ruth (she/they) is a rug tufting specialist based in Salford, Manchester. Working at the intersection of contemporary art and functional décor, their practice explores mental illness, childhood and identity, using tufting as a form of self-therapy. Alena’s work fuses tactility with sentimentality, using softness, texture, and playful imagery to visualise her inner world. By embracing weirdness and whimsy, they create intimate pieces that invite both emotional connection and sensory engagement.

Manchester Tufting Workshops was founded in 2020, with the aim of bringing the art of rug tufting public. Alena and MTW have worked with names such as Blue Peter, Selfridges, Converse, Crocs and more.
