Join artist, Vic Jay, who specialises in folklore and straw craft.

Traditionally hollow and made from the last sheaf of wheat at harvest time, the initial purpose of corn dollies was to provide a home for the “corn spirit” over winter. The dollies would be returned to the fields in the spring when the new crop was planted, ensuring a good harvest.

At these drop-in style sessions, you can make your own small corn dolly (a variety known as a ‘harvest knot’) to take home.

This style of corn dolly uses a traditional plaiting technique which is satisfying and easy to pick up. While you work, you can learn more about craft, history and folklore of straw craft and corn dolly making.
