This year’s National Festival of Making will host a special Screen Lancashire programme exploring film, place, storytelling and regional identity through international screenings, talks and participatory activity across the festival weekend.

Developed as part of research to develop a Blackburn with Darwen Screen Strategy, the programme brings together established filmmakers, emerging voices and industry conversations to explore the role screen culture can play within Lancashire’s future creative economy.

The programme will include contributions and international screenings connected to Johnny Vegas, Michael Winterbottom, Elaine Constantine and artists connected to the Art in Manufacturing commissions, alongside film activity with young people from Lahore and workshops exploring filmmaking and creative practice.

Across the weekend, audiences will be invited to experience contemporary film culture in dialogue with ideas around manufacturing, identity, community and place, helping test and shape the future ambitions of Screen Lancashire through a live public festival environment.

Presented in partnership with Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council and the University of Lancashire.

About Screen Lancashire

Screen Lancashire is a UK Shared Prosperity Fund-supported screen strategy programme hosted by the University of Lancashire in partnership with Blackburn with Darwen Council.

The programme is exploring how screen and film activity can support place-making, skills development, inward investment and cultural participation across Lancashire. Working across strategy, industry engagement and public-facing activity, Screen Lancashire aims to build a long-term vision for screen culture within the region.

As part of the National Festival of Making 2026, Screen Lancashire is collaborating with artists, filmmakers, production partners and community organisations to deliver a pilot programme of screenings, workshops and industry conversations. The activity forms part of a wider research and development approach testing how film and screen activity can contribute to Lancashire’s cultural and economic future.

Partners and collaborators connected to the programme include the National Festival of Making, Revolution Films, Creative England and a range of regional, national and international creative practitioners.
