Join filmmaker Aeman Ali Afzal and Shabaz Says for an inspiring conversation on filmmaking, social media, audience building and creating opportunities in the digital age.

Join filmmaker Aeman Ali Afzal, founder of Indie Crib, alongside social media creator, broadcaster and author Shabaz Ali (Shabaz Says) for a conversation exploring how filmmakers and creators can build audiences, create opportunities and take control of their own success in the digital age.

Aeman is a filmmaker, director and entrepreneur from Blackburn with over a decade of experience working across commercial, documentary and narrative film production. Having built his production company from the ground up and experienced the challenges independent filmmakers face in getting their work seen, he founded Indie Crib to help connect independent films with audiences and create new opportunities for emerging talent.

Joining him is Shabaz Says, one of the UK’s most recognisable digital creators, who has built an audience of millions through his unique blend of humour, social commentary and authentic storytelling. His journey demonstrates the power of social media to build communities, open doors and reach audiences directly without relying on traditional gatekeepers.

Together, Aeman and Shabaz will discuss:

  • Building an audience from scratch
  • Using social media as a discovery funnel
  • Marketing films and creative projects online
  • Turning content into career opportunities
  • Independent film distribution and audience growth
  • Creating your own path in the creative industries

Drawing on their very different but equally inspiring journeys, this session will explore how the worlds of filmmaking, content creation and digital media are becoming increasingly connected, and how creators can use these tools to reach wider audiences and build sustainable careers.

Whether you’re a filmmaker, producer, student, content creator or simply passionate about storytelling, this discussion will provide practical insights, real world experiences and honest advice about navigating today’s creative landscape.

Please note: Unfortunately there are only two spaces for wheelchairs per screening. These are available to book online. Please contact a member of festival staff at the venue if you’d like to see if there are available spaces on the day.

Presented in partnership with Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council and the University of Lancashire.
