Acclaimed Director and Photographer in conversation with writer, DJ and cultural historian.

Join acclaimed filmmaker Elaine Constantine and writer, DJ and cultural historian Dave Haslam for a special conversation exploring the making and legacy of Elaine’s film, Northern Soul and the enduring importance of telling stories rooted in place, working class cultures and lived experience.

Drawing on their shared passion for music, youth culture and social history, Constantine and Haslam will discuss the cultural significance of Northern Soul, the challenges and opportunities of making films outside traditional industry centres, and why authentic local storytelling matters now more than ever.

The conversation will explore how film can preserve overlooked histories, celebrate working-class culture and create space for voices and experiences that are too often absent from mainstream narratives. Together they will reflect on the relationship between place and creativity, the role of music in shaping identity, and the importance of investing in regional talent and production.

At a time when the screen industries are increasingly looking beyond London for stories, locations and audiences, this event offers a timely discussion about the value of making work in the places that inspire it, and ensuring that communities can see themselves reflected on screen.
