Rituals in Clay: Exploring Personal Stories Through Ceramic Tiles with Nehal Aamir
Join one of this year’s commissioned artists Nehal Aamir, in a workshop exploring personal stories and tile decorating techniques.
Nehal Aamir has been in residence with Darwen Terracotta as part of Season Six of Art in Manufacturing, the headline commissioning programme of the National Festival of Making. Alongside her exhibition, which will be on display in Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery’s Watercolour Gallery, Nehal is delivering a one-off workshop over the Festival weekend.
During the workshop, participants will be asked to reflect on their daily rituals – whether it’s a morning routine, family tradition, cultural practice, or spiritual ceremony. Nehal will then take you through the steps of depicting this onto a tile, experimenting with different techniques and styles to convey stories visually.
At the end of the workshop, the tiles will be left with Nehal, to be coated with a clear glaze and fired. These will then be available to collect from Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery at a later date, which will be communicated to participants via email. In special circumstances, we may be able to arrange delivery of tiles to participants.
Workshop Information:
The workshop is taking place at Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery. The venue is accessible to people who use a wheelchair via a ramp at the main entrance. The exact location within the venue will be sent via email closer to the workshop, or you can ask at the Museum’s reception desk on the day. Please arrive at the venue 5 minutes before the workshop. Unfortunately, your place may be allocated to a participant on the waiting list in the event of late arrival.
Born in Pakistan and now living in Manchester, Nehal Aamir’s work represents her multicultural background and experiences as a Muslim woman. With a fascination with craft and its traditional techniques, her work is a fusion of her roots with an attraction for rich British culture through colour and hand-painted surfaces. Nehal has always been interested in storytelling which she showcases through tiles and her work illustrates the rituals and realities of contemporary urban life.
