Learn how to make a Bud Vase using wood veneer marquetry techniques with Emily Parkin
Join us for a Marquetry Workshop with experienced woodworker, Emily Parkin. In this introductory session, you will learn how to create your own bud vase using wood veneer.
During the 4.5 hour workshop you will select a wooden base shape, and use the materials provided to design a graphic pattern for the front. Using a steel ruler and a craft knife you will carefully cut out the sections of the design from a range of coloured wooden veneers, and apply them to the front.
You can come with images to inspire, or come with a design in mind. But there will also be a range of images and examples of suitable designs for you to use if you don’t have a plan.
You can then drill the holes into the top before applying a wax finish and buffing the whole piece to bring out all the colours and wood grain.
Workshop Information:
Photographs will be taken during the workshop and may be shared online, in print material and to promote the National Festival of Making and Emily’s work in the future. Please let us know before or during the session if you would not like to be included in any photography.
Ticket Prices:
We have two ticket prices for this workshop – whichever you choose will give you the same workshop experience.
General Tickets – £30
Lower Cost Tickets – £15
Both ticket prices have been subsidised by our funding to allow more people to take part in making activities, however, one has been more subsidised than the other. The ‘Lower Cost’ ticket option is for those who don’t feel able to pay the full general ticket price. The £15 ticket does not require any proof of status. It is self-administered on a trust basis. We hope those who can will pay the standard workshop ticket price; and the affordable options will be accessed by those who need them.
If you’ve purchased a ticket but find yourself unable to attend the workshop, please ensure that you submit a refund request at least 72 hours before the event. This allows us to make the ticket available to others. Failure to request a refund before the 72-hour deadline will result in the inability to receive any reimbursement.
If you have any questions about ticket prices, please contact sophie@festivalofmaking.co.uk
Workshop Times:
The workshop will be held on Saturday, 22nd March, from 11:30 AM to 4:00 PM at Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery.
About Emily Parkin:
Emily Parkin is an artist and designer, originally from Suffolk but now living and working in Saltaire, West Yorkshire.
Emily initially studied at Brighton University as a three-dimensional designer, working primarily in wood. She went on to teach art and design for nine years at secondary school whilst developing her own collection. She achieved a Master’s degree at Leeds University, in Gallery and Museum studies to link her love of heritage and history to her art practice.
Emily now works as a freeland artist and recently had her first children’s illustrated book published, which tells the story of the industrialist Titus Salt, and how he built the Victorian village of Saltaire.
‘My Work reflects the shapes and styles of nineteenth century architecture and machinery. A love of museums, history and architecture have a direct link to my work, where shapes of oily levers, wheels, buttons or stone corbels can often be picked out. The shapes, smalls and weight and grandeur of the impressive designs from the Victorian era have always had an effect on me and immediately send my mind to warm nostalgic reflection.
My three-dimensional work has recently taken a two-dimensional turn as I have been using wood in veneer form (thin layers of wood) to produce a more graphic and sometimes abstract take on the nineteenth century theme’.
