Lets Make Art - Vases

The National Festival of Making has commissioned Lets Make Art to bring you some making tutorials using easily found materials that you’ll already have at home!  This is part of a small digital programme we have been producing to help us stay connected to our makers and audiences during Covid-19.

3D Paper Vase

The first tutorial we bring to you is a how to make a 3D paper vase and is suitable for children and adults alike! We’ve provided you with written and photographic instructions or a video tutorial, so follow whatever suits you best!

Watch the Tutorial

You will need:

  • an empty cereal box or plain card
  • 1 sheet of plain/scrap paper to make a template with
  • an old magazine/newspaper or coloured paper
  • a pencil
  • a glue stick
  • a stapler (tape or punched holes and string will work if you don’t have a stapler)
  • a washed out glass jar/bottle/tin can
  • scissors

What to do:

  1. Fold your scrap piece of paper in half longways and draw a line that will make the outside edges of your vase shape and then cut it out.
  2. Unfold the paper and use the shape you’ve made as a template for your vase on both pieces of the cereal box before cutting them out.
  3. Use a stapler (or strong tape) to attach both sides of your vase together.
  4. Fold over colourful pages from magazines before cutting shapes out (this makes them symmetrical)
  5. Decide your design by placing your shapes on the vase before sticking them on.
  6. Gently ease a jar or a tin into the vase and add flowers.

Top tip

You can make your vase into a wall vase by removing the jar/tin and punching a hole in the pack on your vase. Perhaps you could make some paper flowers for your vase and hang it on the wall.
