The Sculpture Kit is a series of six materials that we all may already find in our homes: masking tape, pipe cleaners, tin foil, tissue paper, toilet roll and wool.
Each has a different texture, colour or property. They do completely different things, but none of them need specialist training, equipment or facilities to transform into unique creations. Brought together as a kit for making sculpture, you are invited to see what you can make with the everyday things already around you.
The kit was developed and designed by artist Ellie Barrett and her daughter, Nora (who was then two years old), during an artist residency at In-Situ.
Ellie Barrett is a sculptor, practice-based researcher, writer and artist-mother. She produces object-based artworks for exhibition and delivers socially-engaged projects. She is invested in exploring sculpture as a collaborative discipline.
Ellie is an advocate for artist-m*thers, using material engagement as a means of activating different circumstances and experiences as sites for making. Since becoming a mother in 2021, she considers alternative methods for sculpture production, which include children’s contributions, creating space for different ways of knowing and being to inform how art is made.
Ellie is an associate lecturer in Fine Art at Lancaster University and a member of Good Things Collective CIC. Good Things Collective is a grassroots, community-led CIC supporting creative, social and sustainable ideas and practice.
