2024 Festival Dates: 6 & 7 July

Bookbinding with Ian Halawi

Follow the expertise of artist Ian Halawi and make your own sketchbook using traditional bookbinding techniques.

Ian will teach you the process of the binding technique Koki Toji, a technique that originated in China and is used in Japan and Korea. Koki Toji translates to Noble Binding – it’s called this because it was the binding used for documents in the Chinese imperial court!

In this workshop you’ll select your thread colour and a book cover from a selection of designs based on traditional Japanese patterns hand printed by Ian.

After being led through the binding process, you will finish your book by rounding off the corners – completing your own customised sketch book filled with different types of paper.

Have fun learning about pattern and binding technique names as you’re guided through the process of making a sketchbook using this traditional technique.

Suitable for ages 16+.

This workshop is £5.

There are 10 places available each session.

The workshops will last approx 1 hour 45 mins.
