2024 Festival Dates: 6 & 7 July

Plant it UP

This installation is a multi sensory and educational exhibit to showcase vertical farming, hydroponics and aquaponics. Learn about how it works and how you can do it yourself at home with low cost, readily available components. Experience the joy of plants and if you fancy it, return at 4.30pm on Sunday for the harvest!

One of our three festival commissions, this brand new piece of work will be experienced for the first time over the festival weekend.

UpPlant small family run venture and small holding based near Hebden Bridge. They specialise in vertical farming, aquaponics and hydroponics and are exploring how this can help us all grow more plant and food in small spaces. On their little small holding they grow Salad Greens, Herbs, Flowers and Vegetables using a technique known as Aquaponics.

In the system they raise fish which provide the nutrient (the poo) to feed our plants. It is a very efficient and effective way to grow leafy crops. UpPlant are also exploring how this technology can be applied at home and larger scale to help people grow their own food. They also are exploring how these types of systems can be integrated into regenerative agriculture which aims to rebuild soils and local ecology and diversity.
